June 23,2014- Bonsai with David Easterbrook

The Bonsai meeting tonight featured the speaker, David Easterbrook.  He was a very informative and had an impressive background.  He spoke about how to fertilize our trees by giving us a formula to make cakes to place on the base of our trees.  We were told to use to use Tree Tone (6 cups), (5 cups) of water, (1) cup of water was to be used for boiling.  Also Micro max (2 teaspoons), Insecticide (2 tablespoons) and (2) packs of gelatin.  Boil water and add gelatin.  Add gelatin to Tree tone, add the rest of the ingredients, then set aside for 3 hours.  After 3 hours take a spoon scoop about the size of a tablespoon and place on a cookie sheet.  Put outside in the sun for two (2) days, flip them after one (2) day to completely dry. When dry, place around tree about 3 inches apart and secure with a wire pin.  He also suggested adding Bio tone under the trunk of the tree when transplanting tree to aid in absorption of fertilizer.

Mr. Easterbrook spoke to us about the way branching on trees should look.  He talked about their placements and also how the leaves should be pointing up towards the sun.   Mr. Easterbrook also showed us the correct way and the reason behind wiring trees.  Making sure the wire starts on top of the branch and not under it and to make sure not to make gaps to far apart or to close together.

Every person that brought a tree was given advise on how to work with it or how to correct problems they were having.

June 2014 Meeting

Next event for the club will be June 23, 2014 a Ira Nelson building.  Speaker is David Easterbrook.

July 22 will be our next monthly meeting.

On our regular June meeting we had a great turnout of old members and new and possible new members.  We had a few join from the Festival de Fleurs event.  A couple of ladies from the Daylily Festival came with a tree in need of advice.

Boyd and Johnny went to  Brussels for a workshop over the memorial holiday and came back with some beautiful trees.  Boyd and Johnny gave a great talk on the introduction into Bonsai and about reducing the leaves, what to look for when searching for the perfect tree.

On a sad note, we have lost one of our past member, Jean Hudelot.  He was very knowledgeable in Bonsai and he will truly be missed.
